No one watched Auburn’s run through the NCAA Tournament on the edge of their seat more than Charles Barkley. The former Auburn and NBA star had a front row seat for the Tigers’ Final Four run all the way until it came to an end after dramatic final 1.5 second when No. 1 see Virginia beat No. 5 seed Auburn 63-62 on Saturday night.“Wow,” Barkley said. 'Well, I want to say this: It might have been a good call. You can’t put yourself in that situation.
Give the kid from Virginia great courage to make all three of those free throws, but I think it was a foul. In the end, Barkley said you have to make that call.“It’s terribly deflating for all of the Auburn fans and all those kids, and even for me as a fan and commentator watching the game in that way,” he said.
'But, based on what the rule says and how the officials have been asked to call the game, it had to be called.' It was a good call but give that kid credit for making those three free throws.' It’s frustrating, because we are so close to the championship game. While many were talking about the final 1.5 seconds of the thrilling national semifinal, there was a play right before it in which Auburn fans would have loved to have back. With Auburn up 62-60 and 5.4 seconds left, Virginia’s Ty Jerome dribbled up the court and lost his dribble off his show that wasn’t touched by a defender. Jerome then picked the ball up and dribbled again. That’s a double dribble.
It wasn’t called.“As we start to watch Ty Jerome dribbling the basketball, it bounces off his back foot,” CBS rules analyst Gene Steratore said. 'It doesn’t go far either. There’s no defense that touches it.
He regains possession with both hands and starts a new dribble sequence. By rule, this is a double dribble. Gene Steratore: 'I think as we watch this in live action, it didn’t jump off the screen.' Charles Barkley: 'Man, I wanna cry right now.' — CBS Sports (@CBSSports)Barkley admitted he didn’t know the rule when it came to the double dribble.“This should have been a double dribble, but they didn’t call it,” Barkley said. “Gene said it should have been a double dribble because he picked up his dribble (after dribbling it off the back of his foot.) I actually didn’t even know that rule.”In the end, Barkley gave credit to Virginia for making the plays but said he was heartbroken.“I really want to cry right,' Barkley said. 'I’m not gonna lie.”.
